Cacao or Cocoa – Difference and Health Benefits

Is cacao the same as cocoa…apart from the spelling that is? Well it isn’t!

So what is the difference and which one is healthier?

Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can eat. It is raw and made by grinding up raw cacao beans, then by using a cold-pressing process cacao butter is extracted. This process keeps all the goodness in.

Cocoa is raw cacao that has been roasted at high temperatures. Unfortunately this process reduces its nutritional value. Although not as beneficial as cacao it is still good for you if you choose one with no added sugar….its less expensive too!

Why is cacao powder good for me? Here are just a few of many reasons why –

Raw cacao powder is rich in antioxidants such as: resveratrol, which protects your nervous system, and bioflavanoids, which are good for your cardiovascular health.

It provides minerals such as iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium – all needed in healthy pregnancy, and zinc is particularly great for fertility for both males and females.

It is said to improve mood and support energy, thanks to compound called phenylethylamine (PEA)

Try these yummy and healthy cacao rich recipes:

Choc cream: Take one avocado, one medium banana, 1 tbsp cacao powder (or more for richer flavour), and add a little almond milk. Blend all and voila your dessert is ready! Enjoy:)

Choc drink: simply mix some cacao powder add plant based milk for a flavoursome healthy drink that hasn’t got any added sugars like some supermarket options. Try to avoid cows milk as dairy may reduce absorption of those beneficial nutrients.

If you love cake this one looks fab – it is on my `sweets to try` list:)
