So what is the deal with the sweet stuff? Did you know that sugar impacts your hormones?…and since it can cause hormone disruption, it can interfere with your fertility.
Firstly, most of us have to accept that we simply consume too much of it. I am not talking just chocolates and cakes. It is the hidden sugar in processed and pre-packed foods such as ready made sauces, soups, cooked chicken, even some smoked mackerel have added sugar. It is also foods like white bread, pasta and rice that converts to sugars quickly. Don`t forget the drinks, fruit juices, flavoured coffees, fizzy drinks, cocktails….all contain high levels of sugar.! ……Did you know that in one can of coke there is the equivalent of 7 teaspoons full of sugar….imagine eating 7 teaspoons full of sugar….arghh!!!
READ YOUR LABELS. Added sugar on foods and drinks labels show up under following names: dextrose, fructose, corn syrup, maltodextrin, galactose, sucrose and more…
Let me give you one example (one of many) on how sugar may impact your fertility. When you eat lots of chocs/or cakes your blood sugar levels go up and you feel great. However, it is only for a short period of time, until your blood sugar level drops. When this happens your adrenals release cortisol and adrenaline (your stress hormones) to replenish sugar levels. Cortisol and progesterone (hormone required for ovulation to occur) compete for the same receptor binding site in your body. This scenario becomes a problem if it continues for an extended period of time as your adrenals need progesterone to make cortisol, this is referred as progesterone steal. You need progesterone to become pregnant and to stay pregnant….Get it!!!?…Okay i accept there is a lot to take in, your local nutritional consultant will be able to guide you further.
Making little changes can make a huge difference. Start today. I am not asking you to never enjoy a piece of chocolate or your favourite cake. However, your hormones will be in a better shape if you decide to reduce your sugar intake…Plus you will gain a multitude of other heath benefits we unfortunately don’t have time to go into right now.
It is totally worth it! Good luck – you can do it:)
